NMBL and I did something different this past weekend. We went to a racetrack. And we traveled up to Pemberton to do it. For those of you who haven’t heard of Pemberton, it’s a town just north or Whistler, BC’s most popular and famous ski resort. The trip up to Pemberton is done on the Sea-to-Sky Highway which, as we’ve written before, is a great stretch of highway to ride. It’s arguably the most popular ride among motorcyclists in Greater Vancouver! The ride up there offers spectacular scenery and fun curvy stretches of asphalt. So much fun!
This past weekend was kind of nice. Just the kind of weather you want for a bit of a ride and to play around with some new hammock gear. No pressure, no time constraints, and no “get this right or you’re going to have a very uncomfortable, sleepless night”. Those suck so it’s best to avoid them. It’s not all backwoods and adventure roads for us (although there’s tons of that too): sometimes we get on our bikes and take our hammocks out to party!

Every year we go to a small, invite-only festival on beautiful Sasamat Lake, just outside of Vancouver. At this annual three-day festival, pirate costumes and fairy costumes are de rigeur. And what could be more pirate-y (or fairyish) than hammocks?!
This year, we didn’t just bring our two camping hammocks: we brought every hammock we owned, and turned our little “The Gallows” hang-site into a six-bed Hammock Village. With the exception of the volunteer skeleton (see our image gallery), we brought the whole camp’s contents on two motorcycles, in one trip. So many people who stopped by to check us out exclaimed, “You brought all this on two motorcycles?!?” We must’ve heard that at least ten times over three days.
The countryside along the I-15 north into Montana is so much like Idaho that we didn’t even know we had passed into Montana. NMBL “Are we in Montana?”. Me “I don’t know. Why?”. “Oh. Nothing. Just saw a sign that said something about invasive species in Montana.” We really didn’t find out for sure until the next rest stop had the obligatory “You Are Here” spot pinned to the Montana map. I guess we’re here. Continue reading “Colorado Adventure Day Ten: Montana Freeway “
We both got sick. NMBL not as bad as I but sick none the less. I spent two hours in the hospital getting two bags of fluids pumped into me intravenously. NMBL got away with some oral fluids and anti-nausea meds. Gail and Jim were our hero’s in all of this. They helped us out, Gail getting us to the hospital for emergency care and waiting and round until we were ready to leave. The two of them made sure we had everything we needed. If you have one reason you should go to Utah, it’s to visit them at Spanish Fork River Park campground.
It was a bad day save for Gail and Jim. Continue reading “Colorado Adventure Day Seven and Eight: Derailed.”
Both of us woke up this morning completely refreshed. We had our best night sleep night’s sleep yet. The Boise National Forest along the north arm of the Payette River is beautiful. It reminds me a lot of the Fraser Canyon in BC… only narrower.
We struck camp and headed north on the ID-55 looking for the turnoff to get to the ID-21. Passed through Cascade and McCall, had a great lunch in McCall, got to a junction for the ID-95. The 55 ended there but no 21. We had gone too far north. And we lost about 2 hours doing it. It turns out we should have turned off just north of Banks and had actually passed the turn-off the night before just prior to finding our campground. Day 3: DES Reporting
Last night was insanely windy. We were camped at Morgan Lake just outside of La Grande OR, a municipal campground on the plateau above the city. Blew my tarp off… temporarily lost 5 of 6 pegs. I found them in the morning but spent the night mostly awake trying to hold fly in place in case it rained. Ugh! The winds rolled along all night. We could hear them pick up before feeling them hit. They were at least kind enough to announce their coming. Continue reading “Colorado Adventure Day Three: Hurricane on the Hill”
Sunday morning we got up early, had breakfast, struck camp, and made the 5 minute ride to the ferry. We knew it wasn’t going to be a long day of riding since the ferry from Courtenay to Powell River would take up a chunk of the morning and we wanted to camp on Okeover Inlet, just across the peninsula from Lund. Plus we really didn’t want to be in a rush on this trip as it was all about enjoying the scenery. And that scenery was spectacular! The ferry trip alone was beautiful but what really made it was the Sunshine Coast Highway ride. Continue reading “May Long Weekend – Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast: Part 2”

N and I had an amazing trip on the Victoria Day long weekend this year. We decided to take four days and meander our way up Vancouver Island from Victoria to Courtenay and then down the Sunshine Coast from Lund back home in Vancouver. This was way more time than we needed but we wanted to have a relaxing trip, free of any deadlines or stress. It was definitely relaxing and stress free. We left Friday morning in time to catch the 9am ferry from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island. It’s a good thing we’re on Continue reading “May Long Weekend – Vancouver Island & The Sunshine Coast: Part 1”
